Tech Talk Corner

Sprinkle your CV with relevant industry jargon. A well-placed technical term can trigger the ATS and demonstrate your familiarity with the field. Be mindful not to over-do it, every pair of eyes needs to understand what you are trying to explain.

Hack the System

Some ATS systems rank applicants based on how closely their CV matches the job description. Tailor your application for each role, ensuring your CV aligns seamlessly with the keywords and requirements.

Beyond the Binary

ATS systems are evolving, becoming smarter by the day. Incorporate semantic keywords – synonyms and related terms – to outsmart the system and prove your grasp of the industry’s nuances.

Groundbreaking Family-Friendly Employment Laws in the UK which are transforming employee benefits.

As the dynamics of the modern workforce continue to evolve, it is becoming increasingly crucial for employers to embrace family-friendly policies and benefits. Acknowledging the diverse needs and responsibilities of today’s employees and enabling them to strike a healthy work-life balance is essential for recruitment and retention efforts. The UK is at the forefront of this movement, as three new groundbreaking employment laws have recently received Royal Assent, ushering in an era of unprecedented support for caregivers and families. In this article, we explore these transformative laws, their implications for businesses, and how they can enhance their offerings to demonstrate their commitment to employee wellbeing.

The Carer’s Leave Act, championed by Wendy Chamberlain MP, gained Royal Assent on 24th May 2023, making it an official law. This Act empowers employees caring for a spouse, civil partner, child, parent, or other dependents requiring at least three months of care due to illness, injury, disability, or old age. Under this law, employees have the right to take time off to attend to their caregiving responsibilities without fearing dismissal or negative repercussions. The leave can be utilised flexibly, either in five-day blocks or individual/half-days, accommodating the carer’s needs. By self-certifying their eligibility for carer’s leave, employees can effectively juggle work and caregiving, benefiting both the workforce and employers in terms of retention and overall wellbeing.

Also becoming law on the same day, The Neonatal Care (Leave and Pay) Act introduces a day-one right for eligible employed parents whose newborns require neonatal care. These parents can take up to 12 weeks of leave, in addition to other relevant leave entitlements such as maternity and paternity leave, ensuring they can provide the necessary support to their newborns during this critical time.

Extending the current protection provided to employees on maternity leave during redundancy, this Act offers similar safeguards to those on adoption/shared parental leave. Employers facing redundancy situations must now offer suitable alternative vacancies to employees on these leaves when available. The protection begins from the moment the employee notifies the employer of her pregnancy, verbally or in writing, and continues for 18 months after the birth.

Implications and Recommendations
With these groundbreaking laws set to come into effect next year, UK employers are advised to prepare for the potential changes ahead. Familiarising themselves with these new laws will enable them to adapt their policies and benefits to align with the evolving employee landscape. By proactively communicating these changes to employees, businesses can raise awareness of the additional rights and support available to their workforce. Demonstrating a commitment to employee wellbeing through comprehensive family-friendly benefits can also have positive implications for recruitment and retention efforts.

Parting thoughts

The UK is taking significant strides in supporting its workforce through transformative family-friendly employment laws. The Carer’s Leave Act, The Neonatal Care (Leave and Pay) Act, and The Protection from Redundancy (Pregnancy and Family Leave) Act will undoubtedly have a far-reaching impact on employees’ lives, allowing them to effectively balance their caregiving responsibilities with their work commitments. By embracing these changes and offering enhanced support in line with the new laws, employers can show their dedication to employee wellbeing and foster a more inclusive and supportive work environment for all.

Silent Resignation: Unveiling the Rise of Quiet Quitting in the UK Workforce

In the realm of contemporary workplaces, a curious phenomenon has emerged, subtly reshaping the dynamics between employees and employers. Known as “quiet quitting,” this silent departure trend has gained traction across the United Kingdom, leaving employers bewildered and employees yearning for a change. Touchscreen Talent lifts the lid on this topic, we delve into the essence of quiet quitting, explore regional statistics within the UK, highlight the sectors most affected, and examine the underlying factors that contribute to this growing behavior in the workforce.

Regional Statistics

Quiet quitting is not confined to a specific region; it permeates workplaces throughout the UK. However, certain regions have witnessed a more significant impact than others. According to recent surveys conducted by leading employment agencies, the following statistics shed light on the prevalence of quiet quitting across different regions:

London: 33% of employees have admitted to engaging in quiet quitting behavior.
Manchester: 28% of employees have experienced or witnessed instances of quiet quitting.
Edinburgh: 24% of employees feel disconnected from their work and may resort to quiet quitting.
Birmingham: Approximately 20% of employees have exhibited signs of quiet quitting.
Cardiff: 16% of employees report feelings of disengagement leading to potential quiet quitting.

Sectors Most Affected

While quiet quitting can occur across various industries, certain sectors have experienced a more significant impact. These sectors include:
Information Technology (IT): With its demanding nature and rapidly evolving landscape, the IT sector has seen a rise in quiet quitting behavior. Long working hours, limited growth opportunities, and stagnant wages contribute to employee disengagement.
Customer Service and Retail: High-pressure environments, coupled with demanding customers, have led to increased burnout and dissatisfaction among employees. Consequently, individuals often resort to quiet quitting rather than voicing their concerns.
Healthcare: Understaffing, heavy workloads, and emotional exhaustion have prompted some healthcare professionals to quietly resign from their positions rather than endure the mounting strain.
Finance: Intense competition, excessive workload, and a lack of work-life balance have contributed to disillusionment within the finance sector. Many individuals opt for silent resignation to escape the toxic work environment.

Factors Influencing Quiet Quitting

Several factors contribute to the emergence of quiet quitting behavior in the workforce:

Lack of Recognition: Employees who feel undervalued or underappreciated are more likely to disengage from their work and resort to quiet quitting.
Poor Work-Life Balance: The inability to strike a healthy balance between personal and professional life can lead to burnout and eventual quiet resignation.
Limited Growth Opportunities: The absence of growth prospects and stagnant career trajectories dampen motivation, leading employees to quietly quit rather than voice their concerns.
Toxic Work Environments: Hostile work cultures, including bullying, discrimination, and harassment, can drive employees to silently withdraw from their roles.
Communication Breakdown: A breakdown in communication between management and employees, where concerns and suggestions go unaddressed, fosters disengagement and quiet quitting.

Food for thought

Quiet quitting has emerged as a significant challenge within the UK workforce, impacting individuals across various industries and regions. Recognizing and addressing the factors that contribute to silent resignations is essential for employers to foster a more engaged and satisfied workforce. By prioritizing employee recognition, promoting work-life balance, providing growth opportunities, nurturing healthy work environments, and improving communication channels, organisations can mitigate the prevalence of quiet quitting and create a more vibrant and productive workplace culture.

Remember, understanding the phenomenon of quiet quitting is the first step toward rectifying the underlying issues and cultivating an environment where employees feel valued, supported, and motivated to thrive.

The world is changing around me!

There is a lot being reported in the media about the goings on within the Technology Sector and it appears that there is a Macro Economic environment evolving which could affect you and those close to you. With some of the largest employers in the world having to scale back, it’s only right to question whether or not this with affect me? Afterall, how can it be that there are reports of skills shortages and record numbers of job vacancies yet people are still being released from their employers? It’s a complicated issue but one thing is certain, the Tech landscape is changing and as a result, companies are having to calibrate themselves to the new world and the demands placed upon them. As a result, companies will need to remain profitable, invest to future proof themselves and become leaner and more productive operations.

With this in mind, it’s natural to experience a range of emotions during a period of change in your company. Depending upon your circumstances, there are a number of emotional states you might experience, here are examples of what you might experience or see others experience:

Uncertainty: You may feel uncertain about your future at the company and your job security. It’s normal to feel anxious and worried about what the changes might mean for your role.

Fear: You might feel afraid of the unknown or fear that you won’t be able to adapt to the changes. It’s natural to fear change, especially if it’s something you don’t have control over.

Frustration: You may feel frustrated with the changes, especially if they’re causing disruptions to your normal work routine or if you don’t understand why they’re being implemented.

Anger: You might feel angry if you feel like the changes are unfair or if you feel like you’re being negatively impacted by them.

Resentment: You may feel resentful if you feel like the changes are being forced upon you and you don’t have any say in the matter.

Hopelessness: You might feel hopeless if you feel like the changes are insurmountable and there’s nothing you can do to improve the situation.

Optimism: On the other hand, you might feel optimistic if you believe that the changes will ultimately lead to positive outcomes for the company and its employees.

It is important to keep check of your mental fitness and to acknowledge and validate your emotions during a period of change. Talk to your colleagues or a trusted friend or family member about how you’re feeling, and try to focus on the things that you can control, such as your own actions and reactions to the changes.

You may feel that you are asking yourself whether these feelings are natural, and the short answer is: YES.

You may or may not be aware but there is a psychological process or cycle that individuals often go through when experiencing significant change, called the “Change Cycle” or “Transition Cycle.” This process was first described by psychiatrist Elisabeth Kubler-Ross in her book “On Death and Dying” and was later adapted by William Bridges in his book “Managing Transitions: Making the Most of Change.”

The Change Cycle consists of three stages: Endings, Neutral Zone, and New Beginnings.

Endings: The first stage is characterized by feelings of loss and endings. Individuals may feel a sense of sadness, grief, or nostalgia for what they are leaving behind. This stage is important because it allows individuals to acknowledge what they are losing and begin to let go.

Neutral Zone: The second stage is a time of uncertainty, confusion, and exploration. It is a time of letting go of the old ways of doing things, and being open to new possibilities. Individuals may feel anxious, frustrated, or impatient during this stage.

New Beginnings: The third and final stage is marked by a renewed sense of energy and purpose. Individuals have let go of the old ways of doing things, and are ready to embrace the new. They may feel hopeful, energized, and motivated.

There are several methodologies that have been developed to help individuals and organizations manage the change cycle, such as Bridges’ Transition Model, Prosci’s ADKAR model, and Kotter’s Eight-Step Change Model. These methodologies provide a structured approach to managing change and can help individuals and organizations navigate the emotional and psychological aspects of the change process. They can also provide a framework for communication, planning, and implementation during times of change.

Should you be experiencing these emotions or you find yourself working with a group of people to help them through their journey, the key is to remember that although humans are programmed this way, there are tools to lean on or a natural process of healing that you will go through and you will come out of the other side of it a lot stronger.

If there is anything that Touchscreen Talent might be able to do, by the way of offering advice and guidance or recommend people who will be able to help navigate this journey with you, please feel free to contact us. You don’t need to tread this path alone.
